Each Friday I get my girls dressed, loaded up in the truck and we drive 20-25 minutes to the closest Trader Joe's. Which is not really that close! I've been asked time and time again by family members and friends why I drive so far to go grocery shopping, espeically now with 2 kids. Well the answer is very easy and for two reasons. One I want to provide the healthiest and best for my family, and 2 not at an arm and a leg!
Trader Joe's food, their specific brand is all non-GMO and a lot of it organic, but the key here is that it is all non-GMO. Don't believe me check out their site here : TraderJoe's . People often think to eat healthy you need to eat all organic, which can be expensive. One way I save money at Trader Joe's is following the dirty dozen and clean fifteen rule, when it comes to produce.
For example, if they don't have TJ's brand strawberries than I will buy organic, which are like a dollar more expensive, but if they have TJ's brand I just buy regular because I know they are NON-GMO.
If you went over to their page you will see that some of their conventional stuff does still use pesticides, but as someone who has done gardening herself sometimes you do need to use pesticides, but GMO's are those gigantic Strawberries that you get at stores like COSTCO and BJ's that look so juicy and red, but are loaded with stuff to make them look that way, that is more than a pesticide in my opinion.
Now TJ's does have a wide variety of snacks, and delicious snacks at that! Do we eat all healthy stuff in my house, well NO. I believe in moderation. In my own life I know if I am to strict it will back fire, so we have our fair share of snacks. WE are a snacking kinda family, but another thing that I like is that I can read the ingredients and understand on things like my daughter's applesauce or cookies. Have you ever picked up a box or bag of cookies from your local super market and read the ingredients? There is a list a mile long and chances are you don't even know what half of them are. On the flip side, if you went to make your own cookies you'd only need 5-7 ingredients, so what on earth are they putting in these cookies! At TJ's I can but my husband the salt and pepper potato chips, and you know what the ingredients say: potatoes, sunflower oil, salt and pepper. THAT'S IT!!
My only gripe with the store is that they come out with seasonal things, and since I've only been solely shopping there for about 2 years I don't always know things are seasonal. Like these delicious shortbread star cookies that came out for the Holidays. I went back the following week and they were wiped out, but you betcha I will know that for next year!
